Mindfulness and Depression

By developing more awareness of how depression actually feels and what it is made up of – the thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations - it is possible to become familiar with the mental habits that support depression. These can be patterns of ruminative thinking, critical self-blame and discomforts in the body. There are many familiar thought patterns associated with depression which can lead to despair if not understood. A combination of mindfulness and self compassion skills can be the key to recognising more clearly how harmful and unproductive self criticism and self judgement can be. Through mindfulness it is possiblle to see how negative self talk can create a spiral of negativity often ending with a feelling of hopelessness. The constant negativity directed towards the self literally depresses the individual. Observing that most people would not speak to a friend in the same tone and with the same words they use towards themselves, can be the start to cultivating a more compassionate approach to oneself.
